Zakhota Syriac High School, Achievements and Activities
Zowaa – Zakho ~ For the fifth year in a row and since its establishment on October 1, 2005 Zakhota Syriac High School has the highest graduation percentage in the entire district. It is ranked the second after the Distinguished High School of Zakho, and has achieved good standing with its students achieving high grades. In an exclusive interview with Zakhota Syriac High School principle, Mr. Shukri Essa Shabo stated that “… the school is constantly advancing, and since its establishment, it started as a secondary school consisting of a junior high and high school. Then in 2007 it became Zakhota High School and Shlama Secondary School that contains grades 1-9, elementary school through junior high. On this occasion, we would like to thank Zakho School District, Director of Education and board for their support and assistance by their visits to our school, to providing stationary, furniture and other essentials.
We must also mention that the Assyrian Aid Society / Dohuk provided some furniture for the school in addition to many supplies and equipment and also handling some of the transportation expenses to transport teachers from Dohuk and Zakho to/from the school which is located in the village of Berseveh. In Zakhota High School we accept students from Berseveh, Hezawa and Liefo regions. Our school participates in many athletic activities that are held in the district and the governorate. We have two teams one for boys and the other for girls. Both teams participate in various sports playoffs that are held annually between the schools in the region; in addition to many activities and events. We would like to mention that the teaching staff in the high school, includes the following: Mr. Zaia Younan Dinkha: Math, Mr. Youkhana Enweya Nesan: Syriac, Mr. Wisam Hassan Younis: Arabic, Ms. Delain Shafiq Muhammad: Kurdish, Ms. Mouna Shlemon Poulis: English, Mr. Estephan Dawod Youkhana: from Nisibayn High School and also teaching Economics, Geography and History at our school and Ms. Lena Yaco: Social Sciences and was hired recently; in addition I had to fill the vacancy and teach sociology, philosophy and economics.
In the past years many of our graduates were accepted in the colleges and universities of KRG in Zakho, Dohuk, and Erbil and in various majors and disciplines. Frankly, we should mention that our graduates achieve higher grades than their peers from other schools especially in Arabic, English and Kurdish, as well as Syriac, our native language.
We hope for the new school year 2010-2011 to fill the existing vacancies, particularly in English, and are asking the Syriac Educational District in Dohuk and the School District in our region to help us in this matter. “
