Our Martyrs
Martyr (Sahda) Yousef Toma Hormuz: Esho
Born in 1951 in Kirkuk; his family is originally from the village of Belidjani in Dohuk. He graduated from the University of Sulaymaniyah and obtained B.S. in Physics and worked as an engineer. He was the first generation of leaders in the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa and assumed key leadership positions from the beginning. He started his political activities in 1970 and was known for his strong personality and high morals. He participated in developing the Nationalistic ideology of the Assyrian Democratic Movement. Was arrested and imprisoned by the fascist regime in Baghdad and subjected to all kinds of physical and psychological torture. Sahda Yousef refused to bargain on the principles that he believed in and the love for his great nation and its rights; therefore he was executed in Baghdad on February 3, 1985 without trial. Sahda Yousef left behind a wife and two children (Nieneb and Nina).
Martyr (Sahda) Yubert Benyamin Shilemon: Shilemon
Born in 1954 in Habbaniyah; graduated from the University of Technology in Baghdad with B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and worked as an engineer. He was one of the leaders in the first generation of the Assyrian Democratic Movement and assumed many important positions in Zowaa. He began his political path in 1971 in Baghdad. Later on he was captured in Baghdad on July 13, 1984 through information provided to the security agencies of the Fascist regime by some traitors among our people. During his imprisonment, he was subjected to various types of psychological and physical torture, but he refused to surrender to the demands of torturers and did not renounce his membership in Zowaa. He did not provide any information about his comrades (loyeh). Sahda Yubert was executed on 3/2/1985, without trial.
Sahda Yubert was a nationalistic and a strong believer in his nation’s cause and rights. He was known for his modesty, and was respected by his peers and comrades. Sahda Yubert left behind a wife and two children (Banipal and Ramien)
Martyr (Sahda) Youkhanna Esho Jajo: Kenni
Born in 1946 in Hamziya village in the province of Dohuk. He worked as a general contractor in Baghdad and joined the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa since its inception. He worked tirelessly for the cause of our nation and was elected as a member of the first leadership of the movement. He was arrested in Nineveh on July 17th, 1984 and went through the most severe types of torture on the hands of the regime in Baghdad. Sada Youkhanna was executed on February 3rd, 1985 without trial.
Sahda Youkhanna was known for his strong personality and was committed to the cause of our nation. He believed in the struggle to achieve our nation’s rights, and never compromised on his nationalistic principles.
Martyr (Sahda) Yousef Zadouq Yousef: Anwar
Born in 1967 in Baghdad and joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa after the uprising in March 1991. He became a military official of the movement in 1993 in Zakho. Later on he was in charge of the training center and rehabilitation of the movement in Zakho – Fishkhabour. Sahda Yousef became a martyr on June 23rd, 1995 while performing his duty in Fishkhabour.
Martyr (Sahda) Amir Rowell Malham: Ashuraya
Born in 1969 in Arbil, and joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa as a fighter for freedom in the uprising in 1991. He became a martyr on June 19th, 1992 in Ankawa on the hands of the enemies of our nation after the Assyrian Democratic Movement won the parliamentary elections in the region of Kurdistan, Iraq. Sahda Amir was a disciplined young man and committed to the Nationalist cause and justice for our people and their legitimate rights in their homeland.
Martyr (Sahda) Nashwan Samir Kamal: Ninos
Born in 1973 in Baghdad. He joined the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa after the uprising in March 1991. Sahda Nashwan became a martyr while performing his duty within the Fishkhabour chapter of our movement on July 8th, 1993. He was gunned down by a criminal group and went through a 24-hour coma before he died. Vast masses attended his funeral in Dohuk, and he was buried along side his fellow comrades; the martyrs Jamil Mati and Sheba Hami and other heroes.
Martyr (Sahda) Peris Mirza Slewa: Peris
Born in the village of Carpesh in the township of Denarta. He joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa, since the declaration of its armed struggle in 1982 against the fascist regime in Baghdad. He was the military leader of the movement in Nahla in 1982 and led the military detachments in the Berwari Bala, Aldoski, Sepna, Nahla and Dohuk. In 1991 he led one of the first military contingent to enter the cities of northern Iraq during the March 1991 uprising against the regime. In the same year, he assumed the position of the official military of Zowaa in the city of Arbil. He also participated in the first conference of the movement in 1992, as well as in the Third Conference in 1994. He took part to stop the internal fighting between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. He was the commander of the peacekeeping forces deployed on the line between the fighting forces since 1994.
He graduated from high school then married and had two children (Atra and Akad). Sahda Peris was unarmed when he was brutally murdered in Ankawa on May 15th, 1996 while defending the members of the Chaldoassyrian Students and Youth Union’s activities, against their attackers.
Martyr (Sahda) Jamil Mati: Sankhiro
Born in Baghdad in 1953. He began his political path in 1976, when he joined a secret organization in Baghdad. That is when he joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa, since its inception. Later on he joined the armed struggle in 1982 and was one of the political and military leaders. He led many military operations and organizations within the City Dohuk and performed his military duties, despite the presence of the Iraqi army and other security agencies. He also led a martyrdom operation in defense of the residents of the village in Hegerki in Simele. He died during this operation on December 4th, 1984. This martyrdom operation, saved the lives of 26 civilians from the hands of the military operations of the repressive system of dictatorship. Sahda Jamil was known for his humility and his readiness to do all it takes for the sake of his nation.
Martyr (Sahda) Rofael Nanno: Esho
Born in 1946 in the village of Belidjani, in Dohuk province. He joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa in 1982 and became an important liaison between the military detachments and the branches of the internal organizations of Zowaa. He was arrested in 1987 after oppressive authorities surrounded his home. He spent one year in the worst prison in Iraq; then after was executed in January 7th, 1988 at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. Sahda Rofael’s village was destroyed as a punishment for nationalistic activities. He left behind a large family of eight people. Sahda Rofael was very intelligent and brave, and never gave in from the threats of the repressive authorities.
Martyr (Sahda) Ghassan Hanna Buya: Ghassan
Born in 1957 in Shaqlawa but spent most of his life in Basra, southern Iraq. He returned to Shaqlawa before the uprising in March and joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa in 1991. Sahda Ghassan was known for his dedication in performing his duties, and he was loved by all his comrades. He died on January 17th, 1993 in his house in a cowardly attempt by the enemy.
Martyr (Sahda) Sheba Hamey: Franso
Born in 1956 in the village of Babello in the province of Dohuk. He joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa in 1983 and joined the armed struggle against the dictatorial regime. He participated in a martyrdom operation with Jamil to defend the people in the village of Hegerki in Simele against the attacks from the Iraqi forces. He killed himself with his own weapon after he was seriously wounded in the operations, refusing to surrender and fall into the hands of the fascist regime. He laid next to Sahda Jamil, who died a few moments before him, on December 4th, 1984. Sahda Sheba wished to sacrifice himself for his people and his cause. Sahda will always be remembered as a hero who did not fear death.
Martyr (Sahda) Majid Lewis: Ashur
Was born in 1974 in Baghdeda (Kara Qush) in the province of Nineveh. He was a junior studying in the school of engineering. The continuous pressure and repeated prosecutions of the Iraqi regime, forced Sahda Majid to leave college and his hometown, Baghdeda to join the the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa. Sahda Majid died while performing his duty in Fishkhabour on January 12th, 1995.
Martyr (Sahda) Francis Youssef Shabo
Born in 1951 in Mangesh in the province of Dohuk. He graduated from University of Mosul in 1975 with a B.S. in civil engineering. During his career, he assumed many engineering administrative positions in the province of Dohuk, the last being a director of department of irrigation in Dohuk.
Sahda Youssef was a model citizen, modest, practical diligent, and faithful to his nation. He believed in national unity and the rights of our people, that is what motivated Sahda Francis to join the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa in 1991. He was selected to join the list of candidates to run for the parliamentary elections for the North region of Iraq. He became a parliamentarian working to defend the rights of his people. He actively participated in various parliamentarian committees, including: Finance, Economic Affairs and Planning, Development and accounting. He also had participated in the first conference of Zowaa in 1992, and worked actively for the national unity. He worked hard to remove the grievances on our villages and returning the right to their native owners.
Sahda Fracis was murdered the morning of June 1st, 1993 in Dohuk by a terrorist group which was identified by the Kurdish authorities in the North region of Iraq, but no action was taken until today and his case is still open. Sahda Francis left behind a family of three children and wife.
Martyr (Sahda) Samir Moshe Murad
Born in 1972 in Ankawa Arbil. He graduated from high school and joined the ranks of the movement in 1994 and served in the Arbil region. He was known by his personality, humanity and his devotion to the cause of the people. Sahda Samir was murdered on May 12th, 1996 in Ankawa when he was defending the students and was attacked by a gang of outlaws.
Martyr (Sahda) Zaia Yonadam Zaia
Born in 1973 in the village of Balamand in Nahla – Iraq. He joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement during the uprising in 1991. He died on December 17th, 1994 in the city center of Arbil during an attack on the Media Center of our movement. This attack was one of many attacks by the enemies of our nation and our cause, aimed at the headquarters and offices of Zowaa in Dohuk, Zakho, Aqrah and others. Sahda Zaia, despite of his short and active life, will be always remembered along all our martyrs who died for the cause of our nation and the right of our people.
Martyr (Sahda) Kamal Yacoub Dawood: Ninwaya
Joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement – Zowaa after the 1991 uprising and was martyred on March 7th, 1995 while performing his duty in Fishkhabour. Sahda Kamal is known among his friends as a dedicated and disciplined individual in performing his duties.
Martyr (Sahda) Rev. Benjamin Hormuz Tajuddin

Was known by his dignity and reverence in the completion of nationalistic and religious duties. He was known for his moral support for all the nationalistic, cultural and social activities in the field of education, especially the Syriac language. He was also faithful to the obligations to participate in all political events. He was keen to express his opinion and give his advice where needed in the daily operations of our movement, especially in terms of strengthening the unity of the national political action.
Sahda Rev. Benyamin was joined the ranks of priesthood in 1985 to continue his religious and nationalistic obligations.
Sahda Father Benjamin was killed by a mortar bombing, which took place on August 26th, 1996 during the battle between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, that controlled the city Rawanduz and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which controlled the township of Diana. That proves that martyrdom chosen voluntarily to sacrifice one’s life towards the noble goals, will last in the minds of successive generations. Glory and eternity for the martyrs of our freedom and democracy.
Martyr (Sahda) Romeo Esho Dawod

Education: Bachelor of Art in college of Language studies, University of Baghdad.
Membership status: a member of Zowaa
Political status: a member of the Organization of Zowaa.
Date of affiliation: joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement after the fall of the dictatorship regime, April 9th, 2003.
Date of martyrdom: March 26th, 2004.
Our hero: you have joined the Iraqi Police Service and in these difficult circumstances is the perilous evidence to your courage and your faith in the bright future for the Iraqi people in general and your Chaldoassyrian Syriac nation in particular. That encouraged you to join the most noble and most dangerous service in Iraq, to fight the terrorists and killers.
Since joining the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement, Sahda Romeo worked with dedication and sincerity in the pursuit of criminals as a police officer in a number of areas of Kirkuk. As a result of his efforts and his dedication to his duties in his work and commitment, he was transferred to the Kirkuk police department, where he was assassinated by the terrorist on March 26th, 2004.
Deceased: Fayez Wadee’a Kaju
DOB: 1962 in Alqush, Nineveh.
Marital status: Married, two sons and a daughter.
Education: Bachelor of Science from Technology University in 1984.
Date of death: 24 December 2004.
Was known for his nationalism and love to his people and his dedication towards the national unity. He was liked by many, and people knew him for his delicate artistic sense. He has many great accomplishments, including:
Was a great writer, artist and musician and had many cultural and administrative activities.
Was a member of the Iraqi Writers Union.
Member of the Executive Bureau of the Syriac Writers Union.
Member of the Cultural Committee of the Ashurbanipal Association.
Member of the Society for Syriac-speaking artists since 1983.
He also had many projects in literature and art, where he wrote numerous articles in magazines and newspapers, including Echo of Babel Journal, Rebenutha Magazine and Bahra newspaper.
He is an author for five research papers about church melodies and wrote fifteen hymns.
He composed and wrote a number of songs in Syriac.
He was the secretary of the Chaldoassyrian Syrian National Council.
The deceased was part of the list 204, Al-Rafidain as a representatives of the Chaldoassyrian Syriac National Council running for the Iraqi National Assembly elections held on January 30th, 2004.
The deceased died of an heart attack the morning of December 24th, 2004. The funeral took place in Baghdad and he was buried in a cemetery in Baghdad, in a solemn ceremony attended by a large number of highly ranked personalities on a national level.
Martyr (Sahda) Wael Yousif Yacoub Al-Burachi

Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a graduate of Military Academy.
Membership status: Cadre.
Political status: organization director.
Date of affiliation: He joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement after the fall of the dictatorial regime on April 9th, 2003.
Date of martyrdom: March 16th, 2005
Sahda Wael was one of the first groups of officers who joined the ranks of the Assyrian Democratic Movement after the fall of the former regime. He was very dedicated to his work and was known by his courage and devotion to his community. Sahda Wael’s family is originally from Telkepeh, and is a well known family.
He was a distinguished officer in the field of engineering in the Iraqi Army. He was a director of security keeping organization in Kirkuk, representing our Chaldoassyrian Syriac nation. He was one of the senior officers of the Bureau of Investigation in the internal affairs in Kirkuk. He also participated in building the police forces in the city. Sahda Wael was ambushed and killed while returning home from his duty, by criminals in a cowardly act in the city of Kirkuk.
Martyr (Sahda) Maher Munib Hanna
DOB: 25/7/1978
Marital status: Single.
Membership status: a member of Zowaa
Political status: a member of the Organization.
Education: Bachelor of Accounting, University of Al-Mustansiriya.
Date of membership: joined the Assyrian Democratic Movement on September 16th, 2004.
Date of martyrdom: 22 September 2005.
Sahda Maher’s family is originally from Telkepe; then his father moved the family to Diyala to start a new job, that is where Sahda Maher finished his high school and was accepted at University of Al-Mustansiriya in Baghdad in 1999 and graduated in 2003.
He was known for his heroism, integrity and dedication to his work and duties towards his nation. He was so dedicated to his work that he accepted various tasks and worked for long hours. Sahda Maher worked in our movement’s organization in Baghdad before he was assigned to guard the Minister of Migration and refugees, Sorya Esho, where he and many of his comrades died during a terrorist operation.
Sahda Maher was very nationalist; he was a firm believer in the cause of our people. He loved reading and in particular the Bible. Sahda also loved to exercise on daily basis. Sahda Maher was nominated for the Officers Academy in the Iraqi Army. Sahda Maher died with his comrades: Johnny Yukhanna, Danny Nisan, and Ninos Nisan, on September 22nd, 2005 in a terrorist act.
Martyr (Sahda) Munther Kourkis Jarrau
DOB: 1960 Fishkhabour, Zakho
Marital status: Married with two children.
Membership status: member of Zowaa
Political status: a member of the Organization.
Date of affiliation: 14 March 2004.
Date of martyrdom: January 26, 2005.
Sahda Munther was very dedicated to fulfill his duties and was committed to the unity of our nation. He was known to be calm and willing to help his people when he was a member in the Al-Rusafa Branch of our movement.
He died in the evening of January 27th, 2005 in the university district in Baghdad as a result of a terrorist attack which lead to his death and wounded another comrade. Sahda Munther ‘s funeral was held in Baghdad and he was laid to rest in the cemetery next to his martyrs comrades.
